I've been to Whakarewarewa and Waitomo! Did you see the rabbit sheering? Wierd. Rotorua is wierd isn't it? You get used to the egg then you come across a pocket of stink! Talking of local produce, there's some place on the north island where you can buy Manuka honey which is meant to be ridiculously good for you. I went to a place in Taupo called the Honey Hive (complete with seaside style photo op cut outs of bees) but I think they have a shop in Wellington.
I didn't manage to find a decent hostel in Wellington, but I remember there was a good one in Ponsonby which is a train ride out if you get stuck in Wellington because of the weather.

I'm just guessing, but I think the flakey stuff is coconut, dyed with food coloring. If you put the coconut flakes into a baggie, add a drop of food color and then smoosh it around, it will dye the coconut.
I'm guessing the eyes are made of drops of white chocolate. I think you can buy white chocolate disks like that, or you could make your own by dropping melted white chocolate onto wax paper.
